Since
2005, PA CleanWays has been working throughout the Delaware
Estuary with funding from the Pennsylvania Coastal Zone Management
Program. Together with community volunteers and with the help
of local businesses, 205 tons of trash, 9 tons of scrap
metal and more than 200 tires have been removed from the estuary.
This has been accomplished by over 280 volunteers who put
in over seven hundred volunteer hours to improve the estuary
for the residents, visitors, and the wildlife of the region.
Currently, 22,000 bodies
of water in the United States are considered polluted or
“impaired” by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
These pollutants are derived from two categories: point
source and non point source. Point source pollution
can be traced back to an origin point such as an industrial
wastewater discharge pipe or a city’s water treatment plant.
Non point source pollution originates from various origins
such as litter, debris, fertilizers, pesticides, as well
as oil, grease, and antifreeze washed from driveways, parking
lots and roads.
Debris and litter are more
than an eyesore-these items are dangerous to humans and
wildlife. Plastics, plastic strapping, and six-pack holders
can strangle and endanger wildlife or can be ingested and
cause damage to internal organs and intestinal blockage
which can be fatal. Scientists estimate that more than one
million birds and 100,000 marine mammals and sea turtles
die each year as a result of entanglement in, or ingestion
of, litter and debris (Source: The Ocean Conservancy).
