PA CleanWays of Mifflin County

PA CleanWays of Mifflin County, a chapter of PA CleanWays, was formed in 2001 with support from residents concerned about illegal dumping in the county. The chapter focuses on cleanups of illegal dumps, special collection events for disposal of hard to recycle items, and educating the public on the detriments of illegal dumping and littering. Since our inception through the end of 2009, Mifflin County has held 61 cleanups removing and properly disposing 174.65 tons of trash as well as recycling over 4,000 tires! Over our past five special collection events, we collected and recycled over 1,900 tires!

The Mifflin County Chapter has an extensive network of volunteers, in addition to working with local conservation groups. Since 2005, our volunteers have donated a total of 2,200 volunteer hours to help make Mifflin County a better place for our residents and wildlife!

Volunteers can also 'adopt' sites, which includes monitoring and disposing of any additional trash that accumulates at a cleaned dumpsite. Currently there are a total of 24 adoption sites in the county.

Mifflin County also participates in an annual friendly rivalry with neighboring Huntingdon County. The Golden Rim Award is given to the chapter who collects the most tires at a specific collection event, helping to remove unsightly tires and mosquito breeding grounds from the landscape. While we didn't win the event this year, we did collect and recycle 344 tires!

Unfortunately, illegal dumping continues to be a problem in the county. One site in particular has become a major undertaking for our chapter. The Jacks Mountain site in Oliver Township has had 5 cleanups, removing a total of 7 tons of trash and 268 tires. Another site, Hesser Gap, was a large historical and active dumpsite on a rural road that was easily accessible to dumpers. The site was cleaned in 2007, removing over 28 tons of trash and 1,543 tires from the landscape.

Since the site has been cleaned, large deer fencing has been installed along the stretch of road to prevent further dumping. The Mifflin County Illegal Dump Survey is being completed by PA CleanWays to identify illegal dumpsites within the county and will be released in June of 2010.
