Local
Officials Learn About Dumping and Littering Problem
A
tour of local dump sites in late March proved to be an eye-opening experience
for eight community representatives. Executive Director Kimbra Shoop
coordinated the event to illustrate the need for action and education
about the impact of illegal dumping and littering in the community.
The
group visited three area dump sites, two of which were slated for cleanup
during the month of April. Joining the tour were: Rep. Kerry Benninghoff;
Beth Reifsnyder, Mifflin County School Board; Don Kauffman, Bratton
Township Supervisor; Mary Pursel, Granville Township Code Enforcement
Officer; Charles E. "Yogi" Laub, Mifflin County Commissioner; Danica
Laub and Buffie Boyer of The Sentinel; and Laurie Zimmerman,
Juniata Valley Chamber of Commerce and Tourist Promotion Agency. The
participants experienced the severity of the problem firsthand while
touring the Havice Valley Road, Siglerville-Millheim Pike and Hawstone
Road sites accompanied by PA CleanWays Vice President Don Baker, who
was instrumental in initiating area cleanup efforts.
