Community
Partners Sought
PA CleanWays is
seeking community partners to eliminate littering and illegal dumping
in Mifflin County. The local chapter, one of 19 statewide, organized
in April 2001, and started to identify the illegal dumping problem countrywide.
Don
Baker, vice president of the local advisory board of directors, scoured
the county and identified 88 potential dump sites that needed attention.
While Don was busily researching the community’s needs, President Cadie
Pruss, who is associated with the Mifflin County Conservation District,
was working with representatives from the PA CleanWays state organization
to make the local chapter a reality.
Despite
a light turnout to initial organizational meetings, the group moved
forward with its first cleanup in conjunction with Keep Pennsylvania
Beautiful Day in April 2001. Volunteers successfully cleaned up a site
near the McVeytown property of advisory board member and volunteer,
Ron Amspacher. Since the inaugural cleanup, the group has worked on
seven additional sites, eliminating over ten tons of unsightly trash
and more than 500 tires from our beautiful community.
"The
work is far from over," states Kimbra Shoop, executive director of the
local chapter. "Two sites have been selected for cleanup in fall 2002,
thus far; but we need the support of community leaders to continue the
chapter’s success."
Local
and county government officials, business owners, professionals, residents
and property owners are encouraged to contact
the local office for more information on how they can get involved.
As the PA CleanWays motto states, "Together we can make a difference."
