Spring 2004 Hawthorne Road Community Cleanup

Gathering the trashThe Lawrence County chapter of PA CleanWays held a community cleanup under the Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful campaign on Saturday, April 3, 2004. Volunteers from the chapter and local community, along with Laurel's Conservation Club and Natural Science Society, rallied at 8:30 A.M. on Hawthorne Road in Taylor Township to clean up illegally dumped material along a small tributary of the Beaver River.

After four hours of hard work the 68 volunteers had cleaned up approximately five tons of trash, 2 tons of scrap metals, and over 250 tires.

Larger objects make for difficult handling"This active dump site has been addressed by the chapter in two previous cleanups: November 2001 and April 2003," states chapter executive director, Marjorie Snider. "The local municipality, Taylor Township, has increased their efforts towards enforcement, however, people continue to dump here. They just don't get it. Not only are they contaminating the environment, but they can also be fined for this or required to clean up what they left there."

When asked recently what PA CleanWays did towards enforcement Snider explained, "PA CleanWays is not an enforcement agency. If we do find evidence at our cleanups we turn it over to the proper authorities."

Let's Do This!!PA CleanWays of Lawrence County is a nonprofit organization that works to eliminate illegal dumping and littering in Lawrence County. They work through cleanups, road adoptions, recycling events, beautification projects, and education. Since their startup in 1993 they have cleaned up 18 sites within the county through the facilitation of 38 cleanups. They have recycled 47 tons of the removed trash, and more than 4,920 tires. Other events have resulted in the recycling of an additional 7,500 tires, 21 tons of magazines, and over 100 appliances.

"PA CleanWays would like to thank all the volunteers and sponsors who made this event possible," quoted Snider. Sponsors for the April 3 cleanup were: Lawrence County Recycling/Solid Waste Office, Penn DOT, Slippery Rock Salvage, Taylor Township, Tire Express, and Tri-County Industries.

Cleaning in the StreambedThe Laurel students were treated Wednesday to a pizza party from Little Johnny's Pizza, Highland Avenue location, through the efforts of Taylor Township and PA CleanWays of Lawrence County.
