River
Road Cleanup Held May 11, 2002
The
final cleanup of spring 2002 targeted River Road located in Taylor and
Wayne townships. River Road parallels the Beaver River for approximately
four miles. Seventeen volunteers worked 68 volunteer hours to clean
up three-fourths of the road. The River Road cleanup was the fifth area
cleaned as part of the chapter’s watershed assessment and cleanup project.
The
road is essentially a littered road, but does experience some illegal
dumping of larger items such as tires and white goods from time to time.
Since the road has not been in any kind of cleanup program, a significant
amount of trash was removed from its length. The group of volunteers
nearly filled a 30-yard roll-off container with trash from the road.
In addition to the trash, 130 tires were removed from the road and sent
for proper disposal. After the cleanup, Taylor Township treated the
volunteers to pizza and drinks.
Because
of the high traffic and persistent litter problem, the chapter is working
to find a person or group willing to adopt the road for constant maintenance.
Support
for this cleanup came from the following: Aiken Refuse, BFI, Lawrence
County Recycling/Solid Waste Department, Lawrence County Commissioners,
Wayne and Taylor townships, PA Department of Environmental Protection,
International Asphalt, PennDOT, Tire Express, and Wayne Township Police.
