Neshannock Creek Cleanup Held April 6, 2002

Neshannock Creek VolunteersPA CleanWays of Lawrence County held its first cleanup of the year on April 6, 2002. A total of 47 members and community volunteers met at Papermill Road to clean up litter and items dumped illegally along a section of the Neshannock Creek. This is an active dumpsite within the city of New Castle that threatens contamination to the watershed, and also poses additional risks to local community members who fish that section of the creek.

"Despite the snow flurries there was a really great turnout," said Marjorie Snider, the chapter's executive director. "We had two area youth groups involved—Laurel School District's Conservation Club, and New Castle High School's International Club. The teens worked hard and we appreciate their help. I especially enjoyed meeting the foreign exchange students that Mary Jo Peluso, advisor to the International Club, brought along."

Karen Hohman, staff photographer for the PA CleanWays - State organization, was on hand to take photos of the day's events. Some of Karen's work from around the state will be featured this year on maps distributed by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and on billboards publicizing the Forest Lands Beautification Program.

After a morning of hard work, seven tons of trash had been collected for proper disposal, one-half ton of metal recycled, and 53 tires properly disposed. Lunch was then provided to the crew thanks to the Croton Avenue Pizza Joe's and Washington Street Burger King.

Up The HillIn addition to cleanup activities, PA CleanWays undertakes beautification projects, such as tree plantings, especially to prevent future illegal dumping. After the cleanup, a half dozen chapter members met at Camp Elliot, the camp for Lawrence and Beaver County Girl Scouts, to plant trees. The members planted 100 trees, donated by the Telephone Pioneers of America, Fort Pitt Chapter, in the camping area.

Butz Flowers of New Castle donated a flower arrangement that was placed on the Memorial Site of Wendy Miller. Ms. Miller was a recent victim of domestic violence. PA CleanWays of Lawrence County wishes to extend condolences to the family of the victim.

PA CleanWays of Lawrence County attributes the success of the cleanup to community support, namely: The City of New Castle, Penn DOT, Lawrence County Commissioners and the Department of Recycling/Solid Waste, BFI's Carbon-Limestone Sanitary Landfill, Tire Express, PA Department of Environmental Protection, Slippery Rock Salvage, Laurel Conservation Club, New Castle International Club, Croton Avenue Pizza Joe's, Washington Street Burger King, and Butz Flowers.
