Lawrence
Co. Watershed Assessment and Cleanup Project
The
Lawrence County watershed illegal dump and cleanup project started on
April 29, 2000 and concluded on June 30, 2002. PA CleanWays of Lawrence
County (as our organization was known prior to the expansion into Butler
County) assessed the Mahoning, Shenango, and Beaver Rivers and the Neshannock,
Slippery Rock, and Connoquenessing Creeks for illegal dump sites. Three
new sites were found as a result of this project.
The project was
comprised of three subprojects running simultaneously. The first part
of the project was the physical assessment of the six aforementioned
major waterways for illegal dumps. The second part of the project was
to target 5-10 sites for cleanup. Cleanup work was able to start immediately
because the county had already mapped several waterway sites in its
initial assessment. The final part of the project involved a public
education program.
