Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful Community Cleanup Sponsored By PA CleanWays
of Lawrence County
The
Lawrence County chapter of PA CleanWays held a community cleanup under
the Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful campaign on Saturday, April 3, 2004.
Volunteers from the chapter and local community, along with Laurel's
Conservation Club and Natural Science Society, rallied at 8:30 A.M.
on Hawthorne Road in Taylor Township to clean up illegally dumped material
along a small tributary of the Beaver River.
After four hours of hard work the 68 volunteers had cleaned up approximately
five tons of trash, 2 tons of scrap metals, and over 250 tires.
"This active dump site has been addressed by the chapter in two
previous cleanups: November 2001 and April 2003" states chapter
executive director, Marjorie Snider. "The local municipality, Taylor
Township, has increased their efforts towards enforcement, however,
people continue to dump here. They just don't get it. Not only are they
contaminating the environment, but they can also be fined for this or
required to clean up what they left there."
When asked recently what PA CleanWays did in the area of enforcement,
Snider explained, "PA CleanWays is not an enforcement agency. If
we do find evidence at our cleanups we turn it over to the proper authorities."
"PA CleanWays
would like to thank all the volunteers and sponsors who made this event
possible," quoted Snider. Sponsors for the April 3 cleanup were:
Lawrence County Recycling/Solid Waste Office, Penn DOT, Slippery Rock
Salvage, Taylor Township, Tire Express, and Tri-County Industries.
The Laurel students were treated the following Wednesday to an in-school
pizza party from Little Johnny's Pizza, Highland Avenue location.
