Growing Greener Project Report 2002
The
Lawrence County Chapter’s Watershed Assessment and Cleanup Project,
funded through DEP’s Growing Greener grant program was completed at
the end of June 2002. The $18,000 grant was awarded in June 2000 to
conduct a comprehensive assessment of the Neshannock, Connequenessing,
and Slippery Rock Creeks, and the Mahoning, Shenango, and Beaver Rivers
to locate illegal dump sites within the Lawrence County borders.
In
addition to previously known sites, an additional problem area along
the Shenango River and one along the Connequenessing Creek were identified.
Five cleanups on four sites were held as part of the project resulting
in the removal of more than 15 tons of trash for proper disposal and
five tons of metals for recycling.
The
chapter extends its gratitude to the many supporters of this program:
Trout Unlimited-Neshannock Chapter, League of Women Voters of Lawrence
County, City of New Castle, Penn-Ohio Watershed Association, Second
