Fall 2004 Electronics Recycling Event a Success!
On
Saturday, October 2, 2004, a new event was held in Lawrence County.
Residents, businesses, and schools were given the opportunity to recycle
electronics. The event, held by PA CleanWays, Inc. and PA CleanWays
of Lawrence County, offered a low-cost, environmentally-friendly way
to dispose of unwanted items such as computers and their related components,
TVs, stereos, printers, VCRs, DVDs, telephones, typewriters, pagers,
and remote controls.
More than 90 residents
and businesses took advantage of this event, recycling almost 300 articles
according to Marjorie Snider, Executive Director of the Lawrence County
Chapter of PA CleanWays. The event was held at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds
where the public could drive through a large exhibit building and have
their vehicle unloaded by chapter volunteers. Participants were asked
to take a short survey and also given educational materials about the
effects that electronic waste has on the environment. Reclamere, Inc.,
a Pennsylvania-based IT asset management company, provided material
handling services for the event.
"We tried to
make it very easy for people," said Snider. "This was a first
for Lawrence County and we wanted everyone to have a positive experience.
Most people had good comments about the event, and were happy that we
held it. I know some people were a little upset over the pricing, but
what we charged only covered about 50% of our actual costs."
According to the
chapter's survey results, there were participants from Lawrence, Mercer,
and Beaver Counties. Comments from the surveys showed that most people
welcomed this type of event, recognized the need for it, and would like
to see it happen on a regular basis.
"Of the collected
material, 47 televisions and 50 computer monitors were brought in. That's
approximately 400 pounds of lead that didn't make it into the environment,"
stated Snider. "Lead, mercury, and chromium are just three of the
hazardous materials that are found in electronic waste. These types
of materials should not even be sent to a landfill due to possible leakage
should a future liner failure occur."

chapter of PA CleanWays would like to thank the volunteers who worked
