Fall
2001 Cleanup Update: Hawthorne Road Cleanup
The chapter’s last
cleanup of 2001 was held on November 17. This very active dumpsite,
first reported in 1992 by the property owners, stretches approximately
one-half mile through a ravine next to Hawthorne Road in Taylor Township.
Ten
volunteers removed over 2.5 tons of trash and a half ton of scrap metal
from the site in less than four hours. A significant amount of material
remains and the site is considered a priority by the chapter because
of its size and activity, as there is evidence of continued dumping
over the winter. Look for a fall 2002 cleanup at the site.
A
special highlight of this cleanup was the filming of a video, funded
through the Water Resources Educational Network (WREN) grant. This video
will be used for educational purposes and is targeted for youths 8 to
18 years of age. The video is complete and is available for those interested.
As
usual, the Lawrence County community was very supportive of this cleanup.
The chapter extends its thanks to continued support from the Lawrence
County Commissioners, the Lawrence County Recycling and Solid Waste
Department for equipment and technical support, and Taylor Township
for equipment. Slippery Rock Salvage provided the metal roll offs needed,
and tipping fees were donated by the PA Department of Environmental
Protection. The League of Women Voters provided refreshments for the
volunteer workers. Funding for the video portion of the project was
provided by the League of Women Voters through the Water Resources Educational
Network grant program.
