Successful Household Appliance Recycling Event
Lawrence
County residents were offered a low cost, environmentally safe way to
dispose of their household appliances this past May 22 at the chapter's
Household Appliance Recycling Day.
"The lack of
municipal appliance recycling in most areas, and the expressed need
by residents prompted the chapter to hold the event this year,"
explained the chapter's Executive Director Marjorie Snider. "We
try to meet the needs communicated to us by the community."
The event took place
at the parking lot of sponsor McDuff Corporation, on Mahoning Avenue.
Twelve workers from the chapter and the community began work at 8:30
AM unloading appliances from residents' vehicles. The appliances were
sorted according to Freon and non-Freon content, with a cost of $20.00
and $5.00, respectively, applied toward expenses. A total of 68 appliances
were collected that day, of which 42 contained Freon.
The chapter contracted
with Appliance Warehouse of Allegheny County for Freon removal and disposal
according to existing mandates. Slippery Rock Salvage sponsored the
removal and disposal of all non-Freon appliances Thanks go out to all
our workers and our sponsors: Lawrence County Commissioners, Lawrence
County Recycling/Solid Waste Department, McDuff Corporation, and Slippery
Rock Salvage.
A special thanks
for donations received from Dan & Harry Irwin, Bob Gregg, Rick Nocia,
and Clark Burgess.
