PA CleanWays of Butler-Lawrence Counties

PA CleanWays of Butler-Lawrence Counties, an affiliate of PA CleanWays, began as a PA CleanWays chapter in each county. Lawrence County formed its chapter in 1993, while Butler County formed a chapter in 2002. The two groups decided to become an affiliate of PA CleanWays in 2005, and thus formed PA CleanWays of Butler-Lawrence Counties, becoming our own 501(c)3 non-profit organization. The organization is supported by the Lawrence County Recycling Office.

The affiliate focuses on cleanups of illegal dumpsites, special collection events for disposal of hard-to-dispose items, and educating the public on the detriments of illegal dumping and littering. Since our inception, PA CleanWays of Butler-Lawrence Counties has held 64 cleanups removing and properly disposing 378 tons of trash. Through our cleanups and special collections, we have recycled over 18,000 tires, 31 tons of electronics, and 13 tons of household hazardous waste!

PA CleanWays of Butler-Lawrence Counties has an extensive network of volunteers, including local conservation groups such as the Laurel Conservation Club. Over 2,300 volunteers have donated 9,100 hours helping make Butler and Lawrence Counties a better place to live, work, and play.

Unfortunately, illegal dumping continues to be a problem in both counties. The Butler County Illegal Dump Survey was completed in 2007 by PA CleanWays to identify illegal dumpsites within the county. The survey results show that Butler County had 217 illegal dumpsites that totaled an estimated 316.25 tons of trash.

The Lawrence County Illegal Dump Survey was completed in 2008 by PA CleanWays and found 31 illegal dumpsites in the county totaling approximately 111.5 tons of trash.
