Kids for Cleaner Ways

A Kids' Publication from PA CleanWays April 2006

It's Great PA Cleanup Time
Have you ever wanted to do something about all the trash you see on the ground? Getting involved with a cleanup in your area is a great way to do something for your environment. The Great PA Cleanup, part of Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, is a time period devoted to people cleaning up their communities, parks, playgrounds, bike trails, and roads. The Great PA Cleanup is March 1st through May 31st with the main event day held April 22nd in conjunction with Earth Day.

Hundreds of kids, all across Pennsylvania, are getting involved. On April 22nd, 13,077 kids under the age of 18 were registered to participate in some type of litter pickup. Roadways, streams, parks, forests, and neighborhoods will all be cleaner thanks to the hard work from all of the volunteers.

It's not to late to get involved. Whether you are interested in helping an adult or simply want to participate in cleaning up a place you care about, you can visit www.greatpacleanup.org to learn more about this event.

So, what else can you do? There are a lot of ways that you can make a difference. Choose one of the ideas from our list or come up with your own and let us know about it.

  1. Volunteer for a cleanup in your community by visiting the "Find an Event" page of the Great PA Cleanup website.

  2. Conduct a cleanup. Ask an adult to help you organize a cleanup with a group of friends. You can learn how to do so by visiting the "Conduct a Cleanup" page of the Great PA Cleanup website.

  3. Always pick up after yourself. Never leave messes for someone else.

  4. Never litter! No matter where you are or who you are with. Set a good example.

  5. Learn about litter prevention and then make a poster and put it in your school or a building in your community.

  6. Draw a map of your neighborhood, marking the places that have litter. Write a letter to your mayor or township supervisor and ask that he or she helps keep your town clean. Also, propose a plan of what you are willing to do to help with the problem.

Our New Online Kids' Newsletter
Welcome to our first online kids' newsletter! You can now access our kids' news from home, school, or anywhere that you have the Internet. Now a part of our kids' website, the kids' newsletter will no longer be mailed to your home. Instead, you can read it anytime you are online.

We promise to still provide you with stories about kids' environmental activities across Pennsylvania, scholarship winners and announcements, interesting facts, crafts, volunteer opportunities, and fun-filled activities!

New kids' newsletters will be posted more often than in the past, so keep checking back with us to see what's new!

  1. Always make sure that garbage can lids and recycling bins are taken care of so garbage doesn't blow out or animals can't get into them.

  2. Carry in and Carry out. Whenever you visit a park, forest, campground, or beach always carry out what you brought in. Use a plastic bag or backpack to carry out items that need to be put in a litter basket or recycling bin.

  3. Make litterbags for the family car. This will help stop litter from blowing out of your car. Littering can happen by accident, so make sure that there is always somewhere to put trash in its place.

  4. What happens when we throw our garbage "away"? There is no "away". Visit a landfill or recycling center to find out or invite someone who works there to talk to your class. Learn what can be recycled in your community and what happens when garbage goes to a landfill.
