Twas the Night Before Litter

By Logan R., Age 10, Montgomery County

There was a man who littered, and he was very, very bitter. He fell asleep one moonlit night when three spirits visited - it was such a fright.

The spirit of the PAST came with his memories; he showed the man the beauty that covered the territories. Vast fields, forests and seas, clean streets and colorful trees. These were as basic as the ABC's.

The spirit of the PRESENT appeared to him next, he wasn't as jolly, and he was a bit perplexed. What happened he asked to the trees and seas? The water is dirty and the trees have no leaves.

As a tear rolled from his eye, he questioned the man, why? The spirit became angry about the abuse, and he almost felt, what's the use.

The spirit of the FUTURE made the man nervous and worried because the
sights he showed him were littered and dirtied. Oh how awful the future will
be if people throw their trash so randomly.

The fish will all die, the birds will not sing, the earth will be circled with a
large dirty ring.

The spirits leave him asleep in his bed, but when he awakens, surprisingly,
there's no dread. A decision he makes, he's no longer bitter, he will teach the world not to litter.

He packs his bags and off he goes, to share his knowledge, his heart, his woes.
As he travels from city to city, he makes up an environmental ditty:

Recycle your plastics, your newspapers too,
It's very important to keep your skies blue.
So our children now know what they need to do,
It's a job for everybody, and that means YOU.
