Uses for Trash

By Kimberly P., Age 10, Lancaster County

Were you ever just walking around, minding your own business when you saw trash lying around? I know I have. Doesn't it upset you? We should keep our world clean. Instead of littering, or throwing trash away, there are other uses for it. In fact, trash can actually be useful!

A fun thing is making sculptures out of trash by using things such as milk or orange juice cartons. Some people make a swing by hanging an old tire from a tree. Instead of throwing an old desk or something away, just strip it down and use the scrap wood. Try making a bird house with it. Rags to clean are pretty expensive, so why keep buying them? Cut old towels and clothes into small squares. They make great rags! Tires can be
used for climbing devices at parks, and even for training.

Another idea is just plain recycling. Aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and paper
are often lying around also. On your trash day, get out your recycle bin, and
put your aluminum, plastic, and paper products in them. Aluminum cans and products are melted down and made again. Plastic milk jugs, food containers,
and other products are melted down and made into different things such as
trash bags. Phoenix Plastic Lumber of Norristown, PA, makes lumber out of
100% recycled plastic. People often use it for decks, chairs, fences, and picnic tables because you can't get splinters with it. Paper products are recycled to make new ones. This reduces the amount of paper in trash cans, and saves trees.

How about trying recycling, or maybe using trash again? This is very important because it reduces the amount of pollution, and that's very important!
