The Litter Monster

By Colleen B., Age 9, Washington County

Litter in my world has become like a creature in a spooky book. It's usually the result of someone's greed, seeing only their own wants and needs. Then they create an evil, thinking they have control over it. Soon, they learn that the creation has a mind of it's own. When I look around I think the litter monster must be some
type of ghost, that only certain people can see. I have been to a petting zoo where paper feed cups were tossed all over the ground, and cotton candy wrappers were stuck to the animals. No one must
have been able to see anything! But I did. And I picked it up before any
animals could eat it. When I am by the river's edge near our house, I can see
the six-pack plastics, cans or food wraps from the local fast food restaurant
that were left behind by other families and fishermen. It must be that ghostly kind of invisible again! Because if other people saw it, wouldn’t they have been the ones to pick it up? It’s really scary to think that people could know what they've done, and still not care! That's the kind of scary tale that gives me
chills! Usually, stories end with the monster being totally destroyed. Some-
times, though, the thing will get away. It hides, and feeds and grows bigger,
and you're never sure how it will come back, or who it will hurt. We need to
write the end to this story now! More people need to see the litter, and not
ignore it. Or else, this ghost will go on haunting us forever.
