You can clean up the environment even when you're walking
your dog! Reuse a plastic
bag from the grocery
store on your walk to pick
up the trash you find along the way. You can also
take a bag to pick up the "doggie
doo" your dog leaves behind on your walk.
You
can use fallen sticks
and twigs
or grapevines
to make little
fences
to
support
plants, climbing veggies
and flowers. That way
your plants have something to lean on while they grow and
you get to eat your vegetables!
If you've outgrown your swimming
pool, there are probably a lot of dogs
that would like to use it to
keep cool in the summer.
They like to play in water too. Check with your neighbors
who have dogs and the local animal shelter. Sometimes they
will take them.
You can use all sorts of items for drawing
paper such as paper
grocery bags,
leftover wrapping paper
or wallpaper,
the insides of food boxes,
cardboard boxes or black-and-white
comics, etc. Check with your parents to see if
they will save these for you to reuse.
The magazines you and
your family are done reading can be passed
on to senior centers, doctors' offices, or anyplace
that has a waiting room. School art departments
appreciate them too so don't pitch them in the trash. Recycle!

Need paper to wrap a present?
Use the comics from the
newspaper! It's a great way to recycle and give a smile at
the same time.
Feeders in your yard for
birds, squirrels, and other small animals provide
food for
wildlife, and are
a wonderful source of learning and entertainment. Plant seeds
and shrubs that usually grow in your area to provide winter
food and protection for the animals.

Get together with other kids on your block and organize a
neighborhood yard sale.
Share the work, the advertising, and the profits. Unwanted
stuff that would normally go into the garbage may be something
that someone else could use. Ask your parents first
if it's OK.
Do you have a cat? The plastic buckets
their kitty litter comes in make great scrubbing
buckets or they can be used for storage.

Donating your old books
or videotapes to the local
library or community center is a great way to share
and recycle at the same time. Other kids can enjoy
them after you are done with them, and they won't end up in
a landfill.
