You can help the environment by getting your parents to check
the air in their tires. Sounds silly? It's true! Not only
will their tires last longer, but they will also get better
gas mileage. According to the Department of Energy, 4 million
gallons of gas could be saved every day if all tires were
properly inflated.
During the holidays, ask you parents if you can get a live
Christmas tree, either a cut one or one that can be planted.
That way when your family is done with it, they can plant
the tree somewhere in the yard or donate it to someone looking
for a tree to plant. Cut trees can't be planted, but they
need to be disposed of properly. They can be recycled by grinding
them up for mulch, or they make great places for wildlife
to live and be cozy in the winter. Contact your local recycling
center or PA CleanWays chapter to get information about Christmas
tree recycling.
When you and your parents are shopping for school supplies,
try to buy things that are good for the environment. Re-useable
things, such as refillable pens and pencils, plastic folders
instead of paper, a re-useable lunch box, and a book bag or
backpack that can be used for the next few years, are good
examples.
