Located
on the southwestern edge of the Susquehanna River Basin in Montgomery
Township, Indiana County, Cush Creek was once designated one of
Pennsylvania's Class A wild trout waters. That was before insecticides
were dumped into the creek and the wild trout were killed.
As the first step in restoring Cush Creek's Class A status, a local
science teacher approached PA CleanWays of Indiana County for help
in organizing a streamside cleanup. Because Cush Creek runs parallel
to Route 286, a disproportionate amount of litter and other illegally
dumped items have collected above the creek itself.
PA
CleanWays of Indiana County recently received a mini-grant from
the Susquehanna River
Basin Commission (SRBC) to clean several of these illegal dumps.
A major goal of the SRBC program is to increase public awareness
of the importance of keeping our waterways clean of litter, and
PA CleanWays' focus on education as a means of changing behavior
fits right in with this goal. PA CleanWays of Indiana County is
the only organization in the county to receive mini-grant support
from SRBC.
A
cleanup is currently being planned for Fall 2003. Interested volunteers
should contact the chapter office for more information.
