This
spring 60 volunteers devoted 112 hours to gather 75 bags of trash
through PA CleanWays of Indiana County’s rural road adoption program.
Adopted areas include Blue Spruce Road, Decker’s Point Road, Cool
Springs Road and Clairvaux Drive, Falling Run Road, Getty Heights
Park, the Hoodlebug Trail, Martin Road, McConnell Road, Spence Road
& Thomas Covered Bridge Road.
Thirty-three volunteers also removed 19.43 tons of trash from four
illegal dumpsites in Armstrong and Green Townships.
The Second Annual Watershed Wide Cleanup of the Aultman Run Watershed
was also held this spring, and 87 volunteers dedicated 261 hours to
removing 8.8 tons of trash from 11 littered roads and an illegal dumpsite
in the watershed. In addition, a Growing Greener Grant from the Pennsylvania
Department of Environmental Protection was used to remove 28.5 tons
of trash and 42 tires from a second illegal dumpsite in the Aultman
Run Watershed.
Education
was also a top priority this spring. The chapter distributed 2,500
"Open Your Eyes to Litter" and "Our Littered Past" educational activity
books to elementary school children throughout Indiana County. Through
three public displays, 200 people were educated on the PA CleanWays
mission of empowering people to eliminate illegal dumping and littering,
and three youth groups participated in the chapter's Illegal Dump
Educational Tours.
Many thanks go out to the volunteers who made the spring cleanup season
a huge success!
