PA
CleanWays of Indiana County recently received a Growing Greener
grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection
to remove an illegal dumpsite from the Aultman Run Watershed. Known
as "Spring Dump" because of its proximity to a fresh water spring,
this dumpsite contained daily household trash, old appliances, tires,
construction materials, and potentially hazardous household waste.
Because of the steep
terrain, the depth of the dump, and the kinds of trash present,
heavy equipment was required to complete the first phase of the
cleanup. This spring, Maudie Excavating removed 28.5 tons of trash
and 42 tires from the site.
The second phase of
the project consisted of a traditional PA CleanWays’ volunteer cleanup
in which the areas adjacent to the site were cleaned. On Saturday,
April 6, 87 volunteers devoted 261 hours to removing 8.8 tons of
trash from 11 littered roads and an illegal dumpsite in the Aultman
Run Watershed.
This
is the second year that PA CleanWays of Indiana County has partnered
with the Aultman Watershed Association for Restoring the Environment
(AWARE) to begin to eliminate a major source of nonpoint source
pollution from the watershed. Watershed-wide cleanup efforts began
in 2001 year when 68 volunteers removed more than 600 bags of trash
from the area.
All in all, the cleanup
of Spring Dump and adjacent trash removed a major nonpoint source
pollutant of the Aultman Run Watershed and effectively restored
both the habitat and natural beauty of the site.
