Capture 857 Tires in Fifth Annual Fugitive Tire Program
This
spring, 5 youth groups worked hard to make PA CleanWays of Indiana County's
fifth annual Fugitive Tire Program a huge success, collecting 857 tires.
Everyone who participated learned something about the problems of illegal
dumping and had fun being part of the solution. One group stated that
they learned about how illegal dumping "lessens the value of homes
and property," while another group confirmed that illegally dumped
trash "creates a horrible atmosphere and a bad odor." Overall,
the youth groups agreed that a "clean environment is important
to life."
Participating groups
included Boy Scout Troop 13 (pictured above), the Germany United Methodist
Church Youth Group, the Homer Center Eco Club, the Unitarian Church
Youth Group, and the Rocky Hollow Riders 4-H Club. Since the Fugitive
Tire Program began in Indiana County, 8,657 illegally disposed of tires
have been removed from the "wilds" of Indiana County and turned
in for proper disposal.
This year's program
was sponsored by the Pennsylvania Association of Conservation Districts,
Inc. and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Section 319 Program.
Additional funding was provided by the Indiana County Endowment of The
Pittsburgh Foundation. Additional support for this project was provided
by Campbell Tire & Muffler, Homer City Tire, Lias Tire, Monro Muffler
& Brake, Rising Brothers Tires, Tire Corral, Tire Express Service
Center, and Valley Tire Company.
