Youth
Collect 1,050 Tires
The
4th Annual Fugitive Tire Program, held this past April, was once again
a huge success. 7 youth groups, comprised of 59 youth and 34 adults,
collected 1,050 tires from the "wilds" of Indiana County.
Participating
groups included Boy Scout Troop 11, Boy Scout Troop 133, the Blairsville
Free Methodist Church Youth Group, the Germany United Methodist Church
Youth Group, the Homer Center ECO Club, members of the Indiana Friends
Meeting, and the Rocky Hollow Riders 4-H Club.
The Fugitive Tire Program is simple — it gets youth out in the environment
looking for and collecting tires that have escaped proper disposal and
end up along roadways and in woods, fields, ravines, and streams. Youth
think finding the tires will be difficult, but soon learn that improperly
disposed of tires are everywhere and other improperly disposed of trash
often surrounds them. The exercise is a real eye-opener on how much
trash is spoiling our environment. As one participating youth group
stated, "People dump more than we thought. It’s sad."
