334
Trees Distributed for Planting
On October 5, 2002,
PA CleanWays of Indiana County distributed 334 trees to 10 groups for
planting on public lands. Many thanks go out to Carol Cummins, Bonnie
Griffith, Charles Manges, and Tom Miller for volunteering their time
to make the 4th Annual Tree Bank Program a success.
The PA CleanWays
tree bank was started in 1993 in Westmoreland County as a way to beautify
adopted roads and to deter illegal dumping on cleaned sites. Each April,
approximately 4,000 tree seedlings, 2-gallon pots, and an allowance
for top soil are provided to PA CleanWays by the National Tree Trust
as part of their Community Tree Planting program. Volunteers donate
their time to pot and nurture these trees until they have established
a well-developed root system. These trees are then offered to the public
for planting on public lands.
Since the PA CleanWays
tree bank began, over 14,000 trees have been planted throughout Pennsylvania.
Since Indiana County began participating in the program in the fall
of 1999, 42 groups have planted 950 trees in Indiana County.
The 2002 Tree Bank was sponsored by the National Tree Trust, ARC Technologies,
Allegheny Energy, Dominion, and the Tribune-Review.
