On
October 19, 12 volunteers dedicated 36 hours to removing nearly
1 ton of trash from a one mile stretch of Cush Creek in Montgomery
Township.
Located
on the Southwestern edge of the Susquehanna River Basin, Cush Creek
was once designated one of Indiana County's Class A wild trout waters.
As the first step in restoring Cush Creek's Class A status, this
litter sweep was held.
Many
thanks go out to the volunteers who made this cleanup possible including
Phil Palko and his students and members of AWARE, the Pennsylvania
Senior Environmental Corps, and PA CleanWays of Indiana County.
A special thanks also goes out to Montgomery Township who provided
workers and a truck to remove the trash and to Waste Management
who donated landfill space for this cleanup.
Funding
for this project was provided through a mini grant from the Susquehanna
River Basin Commission whose mission is to enhance public welfare
through comprehensive planning, water supply allocation, and management
of the water resources of the Susquehanna River Basin. The Susquehanna
River is the nation's sixteenth longest river and supplies half
of the Chesapeake Bay's freshwater inflows (about 18 million gallons
every minute.).
