Chapter Accomplishments

2001-2002 Fiscal Year Report Released

Thanks to our volunteers and members we are making Indiana County a cleaner and greener community - one bag of trash at a time. Highlighted below are our accomplishments for fiscal year 2001-2002.

Adoption Activities
151 volunteers dedicated 325 hours to removing 170 bags of trash, 7 bags of recyclable materials, 52 tires, and a refrigerator, kitchen sink, muffler, fan, swing set, couch, and bicycle from 11 littered roads, 1 trail and 1 park through PA CleanWays of Indiana County’s rural road adoption program.

Cleanup Results!Cleanup Activities
87 volunteers dedicated 261 hours to removing 8.8 tons of trash from 11 littered roads and an illegal dumpsite during the 2nd Annual Watershed Wide Cleanup of the Aultman Run Watershed.
2 volunteers dedicated 4 hours to removing 15 bags of trash from Hill Drive in Burrell Township.
6 volunteers dedicated 18 hours to removing 1.13 tons of trash from Barr Road in Green Township. 27 volunteers removed 18.3 tons of trash and more than 40 tires from 2 illegal dumpsites in Green Township and an illegal dumpsite in Armstrong Township in consultation with PA CleanWays of Indiana County.
Using heavy equipment, 28.5 tons of trash and 42 tires were removed from Spring Dump in Young Township. 7 youth groups participated in the 4th Annual Fugitive Tire Program removing 1,050 tires from woods, fields, streams, and other out of the way locations in Indiana County. 8 local tire companies donated the cost of tire disposal for this effort.

Beautification Activities
10 groups planted 334 trees on public lands throughout Indiana County through our tree banking program.

Litter IQ BoardEducational Activities
12 public presentations were made, and over 400 people were educated about the PA CleanWays mission.
3 youth groups participated in the Illegal Dump Educational Tours and learned about the history of waste while being encouraged to discuss their personal experiences regarding littering and illegal dumping and to think about how they could begin to solve the problems associated with illegal dumping. 115 individuals tested their knowledge of decomposition on the Litter IQ Board. 1,297 “Open Your Eyes to Litter” and 1,305 “Our Littered Past” activity books were distributed to school children throughout the county.
