Cleanup
in Rothrock State Forest
Dirt
and time had buried this 30-year-old inactive dumpsite on Trough Creek
Drive in Rothrock State Forest. Persons on the road would easily miss
this dumpsite because of the leaves and rusty color of the appliances.
Upon hiking down the hill, though, one found dangerous, sharp appliances
strewn at the base.
Park’s
Garbage Service, Inc. and Captain Hook Transport pulled 1.08 tons of
trash off this slope. Using skilled workers and a hook and bucket system,
the crew cleaned up the site in a matter of hours—even pulling out a
large culvert that was nearly buried—only a small piece showing through
dirt.
The
chapter coordinated this cleanup as part of the Forest Lands Beautification
Program (FLBP). This is a five-year effort to rid Pennsylvania state
forests and state parks of dumps. Signed into law by Gov. Tom Ridge
in 1998, the program provides up to $7.5 million from the state’s recycling
fund to clean up existing dumps by recycling and properly disposing
of the material. DCNR has awarded a grant to PA CleanWays—State to coordinate
the statewide cleanup efforts. For more information about the FLBP,
