Over 3 Tons of Trash Removed From Rothrock State Forest
PA
CleanWays of Huntingdon County assisted Park's Garbage Service, Inc.
and Gary Fronk Excavating in cleaning two inactive dumpsites in Rothrock
State Forest as part of the Forest Lands Beautification Program.
At Little Shingletown
Rd in Baree Township, 1.15 tons of trash was removed on November 1,
2003. This area was a former site of one of six Civilian Conservation
Corps camps located in Rothrock State Forest and was littered with glass
bottles, jars, and rusted metal. In West Township, Pennsylvania Furnace
Rd. was cleaned of 2.02 tons of illegally dumped construction debris,
vehicle parts, appliances, daily trash, and tires on November 12, 2003.
Contractors were
used to clean these sites because both of these sites were deemed too
dangerous for volunteers due to their steep slopes and difficult terrain.
As part of the Forest Lands program, PA CleanWays will be returning
to Rothrock State Forest this spring to tackle 4.4 miles of Colerain
Rd., which is an active dumping area in Spruce Creek Township. This
time, however, volunteers will be needed to help cleanup this area.
Although a date for the cleanup has not been selected, we hope you can
join us this spring! (To volunteer, contact
the Huntingdon Chapter office.)
