2002
Waste Watcher Award
The
Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) recognized the Huntingdon
County Conservation District and PA CleanWays of Huntingdon County as
2002 Waste Watcher award recipients at a special luncheon on May 13,
2002 in Harrisburg. On behalf of Governor Mark Schweiker, DEP Secretary
David E. Hess commended the Conservation District and chapter for the
environmental stewardship in special collections and for the accomplishments
in contributing to the Commonwealth’s waste reduction goals. In total,
59 award recipients from 28 counties across Pennsylvania received this
prestigious honor for various waste reduction efforts.
"I
am pleased to congratulate the recipients of the 2002 Waste Watcher’s
awards," said Secretary Hess. "By demonstrating leadership in their
communities, environmental stewardship and continued commitment to recycling,
reuse, and waste reduction, Waste Watcher award recipients exemplify
the kind of participation and dedication that will propel us to reach
the recycling goal of 35 percent waste reduction of 2003."
Since
March 2001, the chapter and Conservation District have coordinated the
cleanup of 10,500 tires throughout Huntingdon County to reduce the breeding
grounds of mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus. Using a grant from
DEP, tires were collected at municipal bulky waste cleanups, and pulled
from illegal roadside dumps.
Congratulations
to PA CleanWays of Blair and Westmoreland County as well as Park’s Garbage
Service, Inc. and Juniata College for also winning a 2002 Waste Watcher
award.
