The
Pennsylvania Greenways Program is working to develop an outstanding
network of greenways across our state. You can play an important
part in making sure those greenways stay clean and beautiful.
Through the PA CleanWays Adodption Program, individuals and
groups can formally adopt a greenway to help keep those areas
trash free. Click here
for a list of sites that have been cleaned by PA CleanWays with
funding from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources
Bureau of Recreation and Conservation.
A greenway is a linear
corridor of open space. Some greenways are land trails for
hiking, biking, and other forms of recreation. Others are
water trails. Still others serve to protect the environment
and aren't designed for people to use. A riparian buffer corridor
(a protective zone of vegetation along the banks of rivers,
streams, and lakes) is an example of that type of greenway.
You might think of greenways
as "connections" that link our parks and open spaces
to each other and to the places where we live. These greenways
create entirely new ways of accessing and enjoying our land
and water resources. The goal in Pennsylvania is to develop
a distinguishable system of greenways that connects open spaces
across the state, similar to our interstate highway system.
The Pennsylvania Greenways
Program website is a great resource for learning more about
Pennsylvania's greenways: www.pagreenways.org.
The
PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources
(DCNR) is the lead agency for Pennsylvania's Greenways Program.
PA CleanWays is pleased to partner with DCNR on greenways
projects and to contribute its proven strategies for improving
the environment through cleanups, education, and adoptions.
Greenways provide benefits for recreation, economic development,
and a healthy environment for all Pennsylvanians, and the
dedicated volunteers of PA CleanWays play an important role
in helping to keep them clean and beautiful.
Under of the Pennsylvania Greenways
Program, PA CleanWays, a non profit environmental organization,
has been working throughout the state of Pennsylvania to improve
our greenways. Since 2005 PA CleanWays, along with local volunteers,
have removed nearly 47 tons of trash and debris, over 700
tires, and more 13 tons of scrap metal from Pennsylvania’s
Greenways.
Organize or take part in a cleanup through PA CleanWays.
