2003 Illegal
Dumpsite Cleanups in Greenways and Recreation &
Conservation Areas
During the fall 2002/spring 2003 cleanup season, four chapters
of PA CleanWays
carried out illegal dumpsite cleanups in recreation and conservation
areas with funding support from the DCNR Community Conservation
Partnerships Program. Three of the dumpsite cleanups were conducted
on public lands and a fourth on private property, in a watershed
with a rivers conservation plan.
The results of these cleanups exemplify how much can be accomplished
through PA CleanWays' strategies of nurturing grassroots volunteer
efforts and local partnerships and support. Collectively, the
four cleanups resulted in the removal of nearly 62 tons of trash
and more than 536 volunteer hours dedicated to the cleanup efforts.
Cleanup sites
were identified in partnership with DCNR according to the
following
priorities: (1) within river corridors that have approved
or are in the process of
developing River Conservation Plans; (2) trail ways including
visual landscape;
(3) public parks including visual landscape; greenways including
visual landscape;
(4) in riparian buffer areas.
- Hazelwood
Greenway, Allegheny County
Located in the City of Pittsburgh, this has been a designated
greenway since
1981 that had no maintenance plan and had become a site
for illegal dumping
and other illicit activities.
- Mahoning
Creek and rail-trail in development,
#8 Road in Perry Township, Jefferson County
The area borders the Mahoning Shadow rail-trail, under development,
and the Mahoning Creek.
- Wilmore
Dam and Hinkston Run Dam, Cambria County
These two local recreational sites are part of the Conemaugh/Stonycreek
River Conservation Plan.
- Dunkard
Creek Watershed, Davistown Road, Greene County
Trash spilled into Dunkard Creek from farm property in the
Dunkard Creek
Watershed, where illegal dumping was one of many issues
identified in the
Dunkard Creek Watershed Rivers Conservation Plan.
All of the cleaned
sites have had re-vegetation work completed and have plans
in
place to minimize the potential for future illegal dumping.
All project chapters will
nurture cleanup/stewardship efforts in these project areas
through continuing education on alternatives to illegal dumping,
as well as enforcement and beautification options, and by
encouraging local adoptions.
