Greenways Cleanups - Spring 2005

For the third year in a row, PA CleanWays was awarded a Community Conservation Partnerships Program grant from the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of Recreation and Conservation. In Spring 2005, a total of four illegal dumpsites located in greenways were cleaned through this project.

For years, household trash, scrap metal, and tires had been dumped over the hillside in the south section of the Hazelwood Greenway near King Lake Street. Over the course of three consecutive Saturdays, more than 80 volunteers worked to rid the greenway of 10 tons of household trash, six tons of scrap metal, 100 bags of recyclables, and 72 tires.

After the area had been cleaned, volunteers planted 110 native trees and a native plant species garden around the base of a new greenways sign that was provided by the City of Pittsburgh. The Student Conservation Association plans to assign a crew to perform further work in the area, building trails and addressing an invasive plant species problem. PA CleanWays of Allegheny County will work with the International Mountain Biking Association and the Hazelwood Initiative to provide a comprehensive plan for trail development as well.

Over the last few years, PA CleanWays of Allegheny County has built momentum for the ongoing stewardship of the Hazelwood Greenway, encouraging local involvement through DCNR-sponsored cleanups and greenway education and outreach. The Allegheny Chapter's goal is to remain active with this greenway and continue to engage key stakeholders so that the Hazelwood Greenway can serve as a model for greenway restoration, stewardship, and utilization for other neighborhoods. Due in part to the success of the Hazelwood Greenway cleanups, the Allegheny Chapter was awarded the Pittsburgh Clean Neighborhood Collaborative and Waste Management Award for the largest amount of trash collected and the highest volunteer participation of the cleanups held in Pittsburgh during the Great PA Cleanup this past April.

There were three illegal dumpsites along this 12-mile stretch of Mahoning Shadow Rail Trail containing large amounts of trash, scrap metals, and one tire pile that was spilling onto the trail. It took over 70 volunteers from Mahoning Shadow Trail Organization, Punxy Bike Club, Jefferson County Youth Probation, Punxsutawney High School National Honor Society's Senior Class, and the Punxsutawney Area Education Association to clean the dumpsites, trail, and surrounding woods. In addition to removing nearly five tons of trash, 120 tons of scrap metal, and 12 tires, volunteers discovered and rescued an abandoned baby Great Horned Owl, which was taken to the Windy Ridge Wildlife Refuge Center for care and eventual release back into the wild.

Construction of nearly 15 miles of the Mahoning Shadow Rail Trail has been completed. Through PA CleanWays' Adoption Program, eight families and groups have adopted the entire length of the trail. Volunteers will regularly walk the trail as part of the ongoing litter pickup effort for the adoption projects. An additional three miles of the trail are awaiting construction and PA CleanWays of Jefferson County is working to have this section adopted by local families.

Two illegal dumpsites existed directly along a 1.3 mile section of the North Country Trail in Wayne Township. Additionally, three smaller dumpsites were located within a 50-200 feet range of the trail and a wetland. Over 30 volunteers worked diligently to remove household trash, scrap metal, and 30 tires from the sites collectively. Since the general area is heavily vegetated, post-cleanup revegetation was unnecessary.

PA CleanWays of Lawrence County will facilitate the formal adoption of the trail section through the PA CleanWays Adoption Program. The Wampum Chapter of the North Country Trail Association already maintains this section of the trail and plans to adopt it through this program in the upcoming months.

As part of Chestnuthill Township's plan to develop a greenway in its municipality, it acquired 244 acres of land on both sides of Merwine-Hilltop Road to develop into active and passive recreation areas and for use in environmental education. Impacted by illegal dumping, the former Romascavage property contained household trash, scrap metal, and over 50 tires.

With the help of PA CleanWays, dedicated volunteers from Pride in Chestnuthill and Cache In, Trash Out (CITO) cleaned the easily accessed area, removing 375 bags of trash along with the recyclable scrap metal and tires. The township plans to revegetate the area as needed with native trees and grasses in the future.

    Cleanup Statistics:
