Greenways Cleanups
- Fall 2005
For a third consecutive year, PA CleanWays was awarded a Community
Conservation Partnerships Program grant from the PA Department
of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of Recreation
and Conservation. In the fall of 2005, two illegal dumpsites
located in greenways were cleaned in the Susquehanna River Basin
through this project.
- Dauphin
County, Capital Area Greenbelt Cleanup,
cleaned on November 12, 2005
Volunteers
arrived at the meeting site, Ames True Temper parking lot
on S. Cameron St., at 9:00 am on Saturday, November 12,
and continued to do so throughout the morning. After receiving
a safety talk, gloves, safety vests, and trash bags, the
group began bagging trash and removing tires from a section
of the 22-mile-long Capital Area Greenbelt. Construction
& demolition waste, bagged trash, and tires were loaded
onto a small trailer, transported to the 40 yd. dumpster
and transferred. Adults and youth worked together to remove
years of accumulated waste and debris lining the wooded
hiking/biking trail.
The Capital
Area Greenbelt Association, Dauphin County Adult and Juvenile
Probation, Diakon Youth Center in Boiling Springs, and
Harrisburg Area Community College were all represented
in the large volunteer group assembled that day. The local
business community strongly supported the cleanup event
by donating food, bottled water, cleanup supplies, trash
and tire hauling/disposal, as well as parking. Supporters
included Ames True Temper, Dunkin Donuts on 2nd St., Kint
Fire Extinguisher, PennDOT, Sheetz on Colonial Road, Sheetz
on Paxton St., and Waste Management for a total donation
value of $1,094.00.
The 26 volunteers
(giving a combined total of over 136 volunteer hours)
worked throughout the morning, taking a break for lunch.
Many continued working through the afternoon, as the day
was warm and sunny and everyone wanted to completely finish
the project. The day's efforts resulted in 5.59 tons of
trash and 39 tires - including two tractor trailer tires
- being removed and properly disposed. A 1/2 mile section
of trail was restored to its natural beauty.

Cumberland
County , Creekside Drive Cleanup,
cleaned on November 13, 2005
Creekside Drive
in East Pennsboro Township is a beautiful stretch of roadway
beside the Conodoguinet Creek. This roadway provides access
to the creek as well as access to Pine Hill Arboretum and
Adams Ricci Park. The Arboretum has impressive hiking trails
that traverse the hillside overlooking the creek.
On Sunday,
November 13, 2005, 10 volunteers removed 162 tires and
2.19 tons of trash and litter from the roadside. Now motorists
and nature enthusiasts can enjoy the natural beauty of
the Conondoguinet Creek and surrounding area without seeing
old tires and litter as part of the view.
East Pennsboro
Township will monitor the site for any future dumping.
