Chapter Conducts Successful Tire Recycling Event
Hester
Minor had a big problem, one familiar to many Greene Countians who farm
or tinker with cars: "What do I do with all these tires?" She and her
son had accumulated over 200 of them, planning to bolt them together,
cover them with gravel, and use them as the base for a road on their
family farm near Khedive. The road was never built, and Minor found
herself stuck with a lot of tires.
She did the responsible thing and paid a visit to Mary Jane Kent, county
recycling coordinator and Greene County PA CleanWays board member. Kent
told her about the recycling event, a joint venture of the recycling
office and CleanWays, which took place Saturday, November 17, at the
Fairgrounds. It took Minor two trips and two truckloads to deliver her
tires. All told, almost 900 tires were collected during the four-hour
event.
Board
members Kent, Regina Nilson, Walter Alger, and Julieann Wozniak were
assisted at the event by inmates from the county jail provided by warden
Harry Gillespie. Kent had nothing but praise for the men, saying that
the event could not have been a success without them. She thanked each
one personally at the end of the day. Said Regina Nilson, an adult education
instructor with Community Action Southwest, "They're such good workers.
It's a shame they got into trouble."
Already,
plans are afoot to hold another recycling event in the spring. Volunteers
are welcome to assist.
The
chapter charged $1.50 for a passenger car or light truck tire without
a rim, which comprised 96% of the tires brought to the event.
