Ridgway
High School Clay Mines Cleanup
A group of high
school students at the Ridgway Area High School has formed an "Environmental
Awareness Team." On Sunday, October 7, 2001, the team tackled the monumental
task of removing debris from an area known as the "clay mines" located
behind the high school building. This area is beginning its transformation
from a dangerous and ugly area, littered with waste, to a vision of
an educational, community activity, park-like setting. Trash such as
automobiles, washers, dryers and refrigerators were removed and sorted
for recycling or disposal. A large container was filled to capacity
in eight hours by hardworking volunteers.
In
cooperation with the PA DEP and Elk County, the team is currently looking
into the possibility of an "in-vessel composting" unit to be placed
on the school grounds. This unit will allow the composting process of
organic materials to be accelerated, naturally, to facilitate reduction
of cafeteria, and other biodegradables placed in landfills.
