Chapter Organizes Eleven Cleanups!

Although the Elk County Chapter is only a little over two years old, eleven cleanups have been completed. Two additional sites will be cleaned in the fall of the 2002 year. The following is a quick overview:

Forest Lands Beautification Program Cleanups
The Elk County Chapter of PA CleanWays participated in the Forest Lands Beautification Program, a five-year program administered by the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) targeting more than 200 illegal dump sites on state forest and park lands. PA CleanWays - State serves as primary contractor for this program.

  • Bendigo State Park, Jones and Ridgway townships
In late October 2000, a group of volunteers joined personnel from Bendigo State Park, PA Game Commission, US Forestry Service and a work crew from FCI - McKean to clean up two sites on and adjacent to park property. This site, across from a spring on Bendigo Road, was littered with plastic jugs, furniture, household trash, tires and even filled containers of used oil. In the week following the event, a sign was placed near the entrance of the park informing the public that the area had been cleaned by volunteers. Park personnel now monitor the area on a regular basis.
