Chapter Organizes Eleven Cleanups!
Although the
Elk County Chapter is only a little over two years old, eleven cleanups
have been completed. Two additional sites will be cleaned in the fall
of the 2002 year. The following is a quick overview:
Forest
Lands Beautification Program Cleanups
The Elk County Chapter
of PA CleanWays participated in the Forest
Lands Beautification Program, a five-year program administered by
the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) targeting
more than 200 illegal dump sites on state forest and park lands. PA
CleanWays - State serves as primary contractor for this program.
- Bendigo State
Park, Jones and Ridgway townships
In late October
2000, a group of volunteers joined personnel from Bendigo State Park,
PA Game Commission, US Forestry Service and a work crew from FCI -
McKean to clean up two sites on and adjacent to park property. This
site, across from a spring on Bendigo Road, was littered with plastic
jugs, furniture, household trash, tires and even filled containers
of used oil. In the week following the event, a sign was placed near
the entrance of the park informing the public that the area had been
cleaned by volunteers. Park personnel now monitor the area on a regular
basis.
Cleanup

State Forest, Chase Hollow Road, Benezette Township
Volunteers donated 88 hours of their time September 22, 2001, to remove
more than three tons of illegally dumped materials from Chase Hollow
Road in
Elk State Forest, Elk County. The 22 volunteers worked hard to pick
up and load two truckloads of trash that amounted to just over a ton
in addition to two tons of scrap metal that were recycled.

the road, and others who helped with the effort. A beautification
project was completed at this site by Chad Bleggi, as part of an Eagle
Scout project. Thanks to the unwavering dedication of the residents
of the road, the site has remained clean. Any trash found following
the cleanup was reported and quickly removed and disposed of properly.

Years of illegal

nearly 300 tons of garbage, along with over 1,000 tires, 40 tons of
