A
Look Back At The 2002 Cleanup Season
The old saying "when
it rains, it pours" can be modified a bit for our local Elk County
Chapter. How about "when it rains or snows, there must be a CleanWays
cleanup."
Our Elk Chapter
board set the year's cleanups in the early part of the year. First on
the list was Cardiff on March 23, however, it snowed on the 22nd and
the cleanup was postponed.
Second on the list
was Old State Road on April 20. It didn't snow, but the rain fell in
buckets - and then some. We went ahead and did the cleanup anyway, urging
volunteers to be especially careful. Our volunteers worked hard and,
despite the weather, much was accomplished.
Ah, the lovely month
of May. Spring Run was scheduled for May 18. It seemed like a reasonable
date when the board chose it in January. But, Mother Nature would not
be second-guessed. We woke up to several inches of snow on May 18. However,
since it was too late to cancel, we went ahead with the cleanup anyway.
The weather for
the cleanups that were scheduled in Fall was much more cooperative.
The September 14 cleanup at Bear Creek Eddy and the October 12 rescheduled
cleanup in Cardiff were without incident - and rain or snow.
2002's cleanups
resulted in the proper disposal of 7.2 tons of trash, along with the
recycling of several tons of metals and a few dozen tires. A big "thank
you" to everyone for making our third year of cleanup projects
a success!
