Compliance with PA Act 101 regulations
(if applicable)
Becoming
a PA CleanWays community requires that your community
comply
with the State regulations governing recycling in your
community. Act 101
was passed in 1988 and calls for progressive, mandatory
recycling programs
across Pennsylvania, based on community size. (Recycling
above and beyond requirements allows you to apply for
a Growth Award.) If your community is
of a size that is not yet mandated to recycle, you can
still apply but residents
must have options available to them within the community
for voluntary
recycling.

Support
from local municipality
The support of your municipality is crucial to a successful
community-wide
cleanup. Support comes in the form of financial or in-kind
services. In-kind
services include such things as donating worker time, equipment,
and disposal
options to assist in the cleanups. Municipalities usually
have the equipment, as
well as the safety knowledge, needed in cleanups.

An annual
community-wide cleanup
Any community, regardless of its size, can have a community-wide
cleanup.
Each PA CleanWays Community must set aside at least one
day per year for a
community-wide cleanup. This must be organized by an individual
or group,
be volunteer driven, and be officially supported by the
community officials.
An annual community cleanup day event will result in residents'
anticipation
of future events. It will help to further spread the word
that people are
taking pride in their community.
Safety of
the volunteers must be a primary focus. Fluorescent-colored
safety
vests, gloves, and "work crew ahead" road signs
must be utilized by the
volunteers during the cleanups. In addition, safe-handling
techniques for the
different types of trash must be identified by the municipalities
and utilized by
the volunteers. All volunteers are required to sign a
release form as well.
Children participating in any type of cleanup event should
always be
accompanied by an adult. Signed parental consent forms
are required for
youth under the age of 18.
If you
provide a photo of your event and/or your Community Adoption
sign
after it is erected, we will put it on our website linked
to the Directory of
PA CleanWays' Communities.

An educational
component to the community cleanup
PA
CleanWays' primary lesson plan is to teach by example
- open everyone's
eyes to the amount of trash lining our roads - show them
they can make a
difference. As a part of the cleanup, a variety of educational
tools are
available for a small shipping fee to the volunteers and
residents regarding
litter and trash problems and what they can do to help
clean up their community.

Display
of PA CleanWays Community Signage
As part of becoming a PA CleanWays Community, our sign,
personalized to
your community, must be displayed at an entrance to your
community.
We will provide one sign to each adopting community. A PA
CleanWays sign
indicates that residents of the community willingly volunteer
their precious
time in helping to keep their community clean. A PA CleanWays
sign also
makes a statement that littering and illegal dumping
are not acceptable in the community.
