State Forest is awed for its beautiful scenery.
This is in part due to the work of PA CleanWays,
Department of Conservation and Natural Resources
(DCNR), and volunteers, as many dumpsites
were cleaned and restored within the forest
between 2000 and 2003. In total, 93 tons of
waste, 31 tons of scrap, and 673 tires were
removed from the forest. A few examples of
cleanups include:
On April
26, 2000, 14 volunteers from Pennsylvania
Power & Light Corporation's Environmental
Management Department joined PA CleanWays
and Delaware forestry staff to help clean
up Milford Reservation Cleanup. They picked
up 4.92 tons of trash and 1.54 of scrap
metal including bottles, appliances, and
a variety of metal objects dating back 40
years. Contractors worked with their heavy
equipment to help with the cleanup and dispose
of the trash properly. After the cleanup,
the land was then seeded and mulched as
an erosion and sedimentation prevention
plan. Cleanup also included 6.5 tons of
trash and scrap metal from the Loop Trail.
On September
24, 2001, mounds of glass, household waste,
and trash at Bruce Lake Natural Area and
Bushkill Road East and West were cleaned
by PA CleanWays and DCNR. Bruce Lake Natural
Area had 16.87 tons of trash removed with
.86 tons of scrap metal. The land was seeded
and mulched after the cleanup. Bushkill
Road East & West had 1.87 tons of trash
removed and 2.68 tons of scrap metal removed
and recycled. This area was also seeded
and mulched.
On October
1, 2001 a contractor was used to clean up
10.78 tons of trash and 3.09 tons of scrap
metal from Five Mile Meadow Road. After
the cleanup the land was restored with ground
cover.
October 12,
2002 Stairway Lake was cleaned with the
help of 5 volunteers, DEP, Pike County Conservation
District, and Delaware State Forest District.
Volunteers repelled down rocks to clean
up the two tons of trash consisting of bulky
furniture, appliances, bottles, cans, and
other household waste which was pulleyed
up the hillside.
On July 1-2,
2003, PA CleanWays and DCNR did a cleanup
at Craft Farm. Heavy equipment was used
to crush and lift items such as old cars,
metal drums, an old furnace, 8 tires, and
other metal items totaling 4.72 tons of
scrap metal for recycling.
This cleanup
was funded through the Pennsylvania Department
of Conservation and Natural Resources who
works in partnership with PA CleanWays to
identify dumpsites and to form community
volunteer teams to help remove the waste
under The Forest Lands Beautification Program.
