| Hesser Gap, located
in McVeytown, Mifflin County, has been the illegal town dump
for decades. In 2000, when the local PA CleanWays Chapter was
formed, Hesser Gap was the groups' main agenda. In December
2007, PA CleanWays and PA CleanWays of Mifflin County removed
26 tons of trash, 27 tons of scrap metal, and over 1,500 tires.
The steep and dangerous terrain prohibited the use of volunteers
so this cleanup was performed by a hired contractor. To deter
future dumping a tall fence was installed. To further prevent
illegal dumping in the area, PA CleanWays of Mifflin County
and local townships are discussing expanding disposal options.
Funding for this cleanup was
provided by The Richard King Mellon Foundation.
