PA CleanWays
and PA CleanWays of Bedford County partnered
to cleanup a site on Bowser Farm Road in
Bedford County in December of 2007. We removed
6.76 tons of tires, 11.89 tons of scrap,
and 10.92 tons of trash from the site. That
is a total of 29.57 tons of illegally dumped
materials! Appliances, furniture, tires,
construction and demolition debris, and
household waste were removed from the site.
Additionally,
we held an Illegal Dump Site and Landfill
Tour to kickoff the cleanup. Participants
found out what constitutes an illegal dumpsite,
the hazards of an illegal dumpsite, and
how to prevent illegal dumping. The Alice
Ferguson Foundation was also present and
discussed how illegal dumps in Pennsylvania
effect the Potomac River watershed. The
Sandy Run Landfill was also toured to show
how trash should be properly disposed.
An earthen
berm at the site will hopefully dissuade
future dumping. The township and the Pennsylvania
Department of Environmental Protection will
monitor the site in an effort to keep the
site clean.
The
cleanup was possible due to funding from
the Richard King Mellon Foundation, REI,
Inc., and The Community Foundation for the
Alleghenies, Bedford County Endowments.
