Chapter
Participates in 2002 West Nile Virus Surveillance Program
The
Cambria County Chapter of PA CleanWays has once again been selected
as the contractor for the West Nile Virus Surveillance Program. The
2002 sampling procedure is the same as last year. By the end of July,
a total of 264 samples were collected with no positive samples recorded.
A
minimum of eight adult mosquito samples and 25 larval samples will be
collected each week for 31 consecutive weeks. There are sites established
all over the county. Anyone interested in the listing of sites can contact
Mary Vibostok.
In
2001, there were 224 adult samples, and 655 larval samples, for a total
of 879. None of the samples tested positive for the West Nile Virus.
On August 30, 2001, Cambria County was upgraded to "enhanced surveillance"
when a dead bird infected with the virus was discovered in an adjacent
county. "Right now prevention is still the key," stated John Dryzal,
surveillance contractor. "Everyone should be aware of these mosquitoes'
nests and avoid them."
