August 2009
  • August 1; 9 AM to 1 PM; Illegal Dump/Litter Cleanup in Mifflin County, sponsored by PA CleanWays of Mifflin County, in partnership with Mifflin County Conservation District. Volunteers will be collecting tires along the Musser Run stream and in a cove of the Juniata River. Volunteers will meet at 9 AM at the first lane (Dunmire Drive) on River Road, just off Rt. 22 in McVeytown. Should the water level be too high, this will be rescheduled for August 8th. To confirm the cleanup is taking place on August 1st, please contact Pam Sechrist at 717-899-6701 on Friday, July 31st.

  • August 6; 10:30 AM to 1 PM; Educational Event in Westmoreland County, sponsored by Westmoreland Cleanways. PA CleanWays and Westmoreland Cleanways recently updated the Illegal Dump Survey that was first conducted in Westmoreland County in 1996. Please join us to learn of the progress we've made since then, the trouble spots that remain, and to discuss ways that government, businesses, and citizens can continue to work together to become part of the solution. Meet in the main parking lot near the terminal at the Arnold Palmer Regional Airport at 10:30 AM and board vans for a tour of an illegal dumpsite. Discussion and a complimentary luncheon will follow at DeNunzio's Italian Chophouse immediately following the tour. RSVP's are required by contacting Michelle Keenan at 724-836-4129 or e-mail.

  • August 8; 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM; Illegal Dump/Litter Cleanup in Lycoming County, sponsored by Clinton County CleanScapes. Our 3rd Annual West Branch River Cleanup will be held at the Borough of Jersey Shore. Volunteers can paddle or wade to remove man-made debris and tires. Click here for details. For more information, contact Clinton County CleanScapes at e-mail.

  • August 14; 5 PM to 8 PM; Illegal Dump/Litter Cleanup in Allegheny County, sponsored by Allegheny CleanWays. Join us for our annual cleanup of Duck Hollow in partnership with the Nine Mile Run Watershed Association. We'll be removing litter and debris from along the banks of the Monongahela River and the Duck Hollow Trail. Please wear long pants and sturdy (i.e. close-toed) shoes or boots, and be prepared for inclement weather. We'll provide all of the equipment and supplies you'll need, including live music and food at the end of the cleanup. To get there from downtown, take 376 E to the Squirrel Hill/Homestead Exit. Proceed straight towards Homestead on Brownshill Road. When the road becomes two lanes, stay in the left lane and turn left onto Old Brownshill Road (at the light near Wendy's), then proceed down the hill to Duck Hollow Pier. We'll assemble in the parking lot. For additional information, please contact Myrna Newman at 412-381-1301 or e-mail.

  • August 14 to 22; 6 PM to 8 PM; Educational Event in Westmoreland County, sponsored by Westmoreland Cleanways. We will have a display set up at the Westmoreland Fairgrounds in Mt. Pleasant Township in the Sportsman's Tent. Come and learn about Central Westmoreland Habitat for Humanities' ReStore - a place to donate or buy reusable building materials and household items.
