Winter Electronics, Appliance,
and Cellphone Recycling Event
PA
CleanWays of Blair County held its first cellphone, electronics, and
appliance winter recycling event in January 2004. The chapter's goal
is be proactive about providing residents with a proper disposal opportunity
for old, unwanted items that may have been replaced with newer ones
from the holiday season.
The January 4 event
was held at Reclamere, Inc. in Tyrone in partnership with Appliance
Outlet of Altoona. Reclamere, the electronics recycler, opened its doors
to the chapter, Appliance Outlet, and over 65 people who brought in
items to be properly disposed of. Participants came from Blair, Huntingdon,
and Clearfield Counties to properly dispose of items that ranged from
old LP players to bag phones, and from console TVs to VCRs.
A great volunteer
group also supported the event, including chapter members and advisory
board members. A special surprise volunteer, Carl Hursh from the Pennsylvania
Department of Environmental Protection, drove all the way to Blair County
for the event from Mechanicsburg in Cumberland County.
In addition to the
generous support from volunteers, a variety of sources donated drinks
and food, including soda from Blair Conservation District Manager Donna
Fisher, eight pizzas from OIP of Tyrone, and various other goodies from
individual supporters.
The Blair Chapter
was very excited to have so many proper-disposal participants and has
decided that the winter collection event will be held on an annual basis
after the holiday season. (In addition, a spring event will be held
at Appliance Outlet on May 8, 2004, in order to give spring cleaners
the opportunity to properly dispose of unwanted bulky white goods and
electronic items. For more information, please contact
the Blair Chapter.
