Williamsburg
Borough, Woodbury and Catherine Townships Team Up for Successful Spring
2003 Cleanup/Recycling Day
On
Saturday, October 12th , Williamsburg Borough, Woodbury Township and
Catherine
Township held a community cleanup for their residents.
The purpose of the cleanup
was to allow residents to get rid of hard to dispose of, bulky
items
that trash haulers do not normally take. Many residents responded and
in 6 hours 14 tons of bulky waste, 120 appliances, 179 tires, 33 electronic
items, 41 lead-acid batteries, several tons of scrap metal and two box
truck loads of good used furniture were unloaded at the site.
Many
items received at the cleanup were recycled or properly reused. Items
such as tires, appliances, electronics, lead-acid batteries, scrap metal,
small engine items, bicycles and good used furniture are either recycled
or repaired and reused. Everything else received at the cleanup goes
to the landfill. Residents were not allowed to bring household trash,
hazardous household waste (such as paint, pesticides, and fertilizers),
or compostable stuff to the cleanup.
In
order to have a successful cleanup, it takes the cooperation and donations
of local government, business and non-profits. Those donating time or
goods to the cleanup were: PA CleanWays of Blair County, Williamsburg
Borough Council and staff, Woodbury Township supervisors, Catherine
Township supervisors, Waste Management, Burgmeier's Hauling, Kane's
Hauling, Appliance Outlet, Reclamere, Penn Turf, St. Vincent DePaul
Society, Danny's Metals, Penn DOT, Blair County Solid Waste and Recycling,
The Sizzler Family Restaurant, Garden Fresh Express, Karen Wyland and
Cletus Billotte.
