Four
Groups Adopt Trail System at Canoe Creek State Park
Despite
fog and drizzle, three of four groups cleaned their adopted trails at
Canoe Creek State Park on Saturday, April 20, 2002. The four groups
are Altoona Interfaith Fellowship, ECO-Action from the Penn State campus
at Altoona, members of the Juniata Clean Water Partnership and the Family
Based Mental Health Program from Altoona Hospital.
The 21 volunteers
donated a total of 42 volunteer hours cleaning nearly 40 bags of trash
and litter from the trail system at Canoe Creek State Park. At a later
date, Altoona Hospital’s Family Based Mental Health Program, donated
additional time to remove litter from their adopted trail area.
Canoe Creek State
Park supported the adoptions by providing bags, vests and gloves to
the volunteers, as well as removal of the trash from the cleanups. Heidi
Boyle, environmental educator with the park, stated, "Canoe Creek State
Park is fortunate to work with community members in a cleanup effort.
Our trails receive frequent use from hikers, birdwatchers, fishermen,
hunters and a variety of groups. It is sad that some of our visitors
leave so much litter around. With our small staff, it is sometimes difficult
to remove litter from the trails. By having local groups adopt our trails
through PACW’s Adoption Program, we can provide a more beautiful park
setting. We are grateful to the volunteers for their time and efforts."
