William Street - A Cleaning
Feat
PACWAC
joined with the Mt. Washington Community Development Corporation (MWCDC)
to conduct the first known public cleanup of a forested hillside off
Williams Street. William Street is a switch back road above the Liberty
Tunnels that leads up to one of Pittsburgh's highest elevation points
- Mount Washington. The forest surrounding the roadway is slated to
become part of the new Grand View Scenic Byway Park.
Prior to the cleanup,
the MWCDC and Western PA Conservancy (WPC) completed a comprehensive
analysis and action plan for approximately 264 acres of green space
ringing the Mt. Washington Community. As part of the study, Mt. Washington
CDC and WPC completed an action plan designed to improve the green space,
link them together into a cohesive open space system, and transform
them into community assets. One of the recommendations in the action
plan was to focus on eliminating hazards such as illegal dump sites
that are scattered throughout the Grand View Scenic Byways area.
William
Street is a hotspot for illegal dumping, and over the years, tons of
debris have accumulated on this steep hillside. PACWAC joined forces
with the Mount Washington Community Development Corporation to clean
the area. On May 3rd, nearly thirty volunteers worked to clean over
ten tons of debris 57 tires from the site. Planning for invasive plant
species removal and re-vegetation is underway. Anyone interested in
volunteer to help in the effort should contact
the PACWAC office.
Funding for this
project was provided through the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation
and Natural Resources, Bureau of Recreation and Conservation, Community
Conservation Partnerships Program. Special thanks to Fox's Pizza, Starbucks,
and the City of Pittsburgh for providing in-kind support to the effort!
