PA
CleanWays of Allegheny County is implementing a two-year program titled,
Round Em Up, beginning now in April 2003 through April 2005 in the
communities of Allentown, Beltzhoover, Knoxville, Mt. Washington,
South Side Flats and South Side Slopes to eliminate illegally dumped
tires and other materials. These materials pose a great health risk
as a breeding ground for mosquitoe-borne diseases and other pests.
We are looking for like-minded community organizations who would like
to partner with us for this initiative.
Our
first goal is to remove the illegally dumped tires. We will establish
collection points for the tires and work with local youth groups to
become involved with tire retrieval in their neighborhoods. Each tire
will be brought to a central collection point and the youth group
will be paid 50 cents per tire as an incentive for their assistance.
This hands-on experience will teach youth the importance of conservation
of the environment and community pride. We would be happy to visit
your group to share our vision of a cleaner, healthier South Pittsburgh.
